501st Legion Malaysia Outpost 10th Anniversary Patch

It has been a long time coming but we have finally reached our 10th Year Anniversary. Through plenty of sweat, tears and effort from our members new and old. The 501st Legion Malaysia Outpost has definitely been through plenty of ups and downs to reach its 10th Birthday!

From humble beginnings, when the fans of science fiction and fantasy gathered in a local forum and labeled themselves MySciFiFan, The Malaysia Science Fiction and Fantasy Group. From there the movement for a costumed group, known as the Costume Contingent arose, but it was not long that members of the Contingent strive for more accuracy in their costumes.

With its formation approved on the 23rd of January 2006, the 501st Legion Malaysia-Brunei Outpost, as it was known then was formed as a union between the fans of 2 nations. The Malaysian side were led by TS-2870, Peter Lai as the First Commanding Officer of the Outpost while the Brunei side were led by its Executive Officer, TK-8829, Russell Knox.

The first ever troop that the 501st Malaysia-Brunei Outpost did was during a Halloween Party at the Outpost in Cineleisure Damansara (E@Curve) Attended by the then members, DZ-2870, SL-2320, TR-5666 and a special guest from Singapore TS-9930. The halloween party would mark the beginning of many troops and the start of movie accurate Star Wars costumes making their appearances throughout Malaysia.

Initially, our appearances were few and far in between, appearing in events such as Movie
Carnival with the sole purpose of promoting Star Wars as well as gather funds for charity at the side in a few events. Though there were a few notable appearances, especially in 2007 (Our second year of operation) when our members were present in 2 very iconic troops. With TK-8829 (pictured on the right) representing the 501st Malaysia-Brunei along with hundreds of other 501st members at the 118th Tournament of the Rose Parade, led by George Lucas himself as Grand Marshal.

However, later in the year 2007, 2 more of our members, TS-2870 and TK-8598 (pictured on the left) would join a few other Asian 501st Garrison and Outposts in Taiwan for the 30th Star Wars Anniversary Joint Asian Trooping. These 2 events mark the Malaysia-Brunei Outpost's first foray into the overall 501st international community, helping the Outpost establish its mark in the world alongside its like minded brothers and sisters.

Our members also took part in the Heart of the Empire, a touching documentary by Jay Thompson about how the 501st Legion was founded with special emphasis on its founder, Albin Johnson and the trials and tribulations that he has gone through in his life. The documentary also highlights the stories and lives of people and children that the 501st Legion has helped to touch and inspire throughout its lifetime. This picture (below) was part of the end credits of the documentary, signifying our involvement in such an exceptional group. The Heart of the Empire and Star Warriors, a documentary about the 501st Legion's involvement in the Rose Parade, continue to stand as one of our primary source of inspiration to this very day, that we gladly share with everyone!

Though it wasn't until 2010 when the group truly become more active and began to focus more on Charitable events and troops.
With the mindset of having fun while doing charity, the 501st Legion Malaysia-Brunei began actively engaging charity organizations and children homes such as Rumah Juara to give precedence to the motto, Bad Guys Doing Good. Using methods such as having the public to donate and commemorate their selfless deed by having their picture taken with the Star Wars characters and then printed for them to keep. As well as getting the public involved with our characters with games such as Droid Hunts and Blast-a-Trooper allows us to properly raise funds for charity and still give a memorable experience to the supporting public. The Outpost will also make visits to children's wards in hospitals and children homes to cheer up the kids such as in Hospital Kuala Lumpur (pictured right), Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun in Ipoh and the Ronald McDonald Children Home in HUKM.

Then in 2013, the Malaysia-Brunei Outpost was formally separated into Malaysia Outpost and Brunei Outpost, with members from either country finally having a big enough group to warrant 2 different entities! With this the presence of Star Wars continues to grow in both countries as their respective Outposts. Though we were not the only ones around in Asia, for the other outposts and garrisons have grown and with it being a lot easier to keep in contact, the Asian 501st groups are now a lot closer than before. This is no more apparent when 501st Malaysia Outpost played hosts to the Legoland Malaysia Star Wars Weekend in August 2013. Troopers from Singapore Garrison, Thailand Outpost, Indonesia Outpost, Philippine Outpost and China Garrison came together to troop with the Malaysia Outpost for a 2 day weekend, when the Lego Deathstar Miniland was present in Legoland Malaysia

Over the years, the Outpost would see new members as we slowly but surely increase to 24 members with 1 member shy of finally achieving Garrison status! We would also meet with many new friends, minders, event organizers and charity organizations from across Malaysia! From KL to Penang and all the way to Borneo, we would troop for Make-A-Wish, Hope International, Soroptimist International, UNICEF, Mercy Malaysia, Society for the Severely Mentally Handicapped of Selangor, National Kidney Foundation, Kechara and many more, all in the name of Charity. We even got the chance to nominate and award the status of Friend of the Legion to one of our most active and dedicated combat photographer, Ivan Wong! (left picture, bottom 2nd from the right)

With the recent return of Star Wars to the Silver Screens and to the Mainstream pop culture world with the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the 501st Legion is poised to be at the forefront once more as we present ourselves as Lucasfilm's preferred costuming group to many more events, charitable and otherwise. Moreover, we are poised to also be role models for kids to strive to become, not as bad guys doing bad deeds, but as "Bad Guys" Doing Good.

To date we have collected a total of over RM 78,000 in donations and made over 100 official appearances as the Outpost! Our members have also gone to appear for over 300 times in events all over Malaysia, Asia and the World!

The 501st Malaysia Outpost would like to thank everyone who has been with us in all these years, the gracious and selfless public that has supported us time and time again, our dedicated members and minders for volunteering their precious time and effort and last but not least, our fellow brothers and sisters from the World over, working alongside us in keeping the spirit of Star Wars alive through our camaraderie and merriment found in our joint troops & activities together!

With 10 years under our belt, join us as we toast to another 10 years and more of 501st Legion Malaysia Outpost and our efforts continue in our tradition of being the Bad Guys who Do Good!

Malaysia Outpost's First Kylo Ren

Meet our very own Kylo Ren, DS-2320, who is also our Garrison Membership Liaison. As Membership Liaison, all costume approvals go through his keen eye and perceptive glance. However, should he spot something amiss, he would willingly give out any advice to help improve the costume to 501st standards.

Kylo Ren is a part of the Knights of Ren from the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Kylo Ren prepares to finish what Lord Vader has started, which DS-2320 also happens to be... Coincidence?

IG 11047's Gunnin, Rebels Runnin

posted Apr 28, 2015, 8:33 AM by Kevin Wu

Hot on the heels of our latest recruit is Imperial Gunner, IG 11047, Iskandar "Isky" Shah. Isky as he is known among his friends, share a passion for doing good and is well respected among the members of the 501st Legion Malaysia as well as Singapore. Initially, he merely attended events alongside his wife and fellow member for events and would support from a distance. However he gradually started getting involved more and more especially with a lot more direct "influence" from his wife and he has helped mind/provide imperial support in many troops and is instrumental in keeping the troopers in tip top shape. This is especially shown with his deeds and support during the Singapore Chingay Parade 2015 where he kept the troopers marching in the parade safe with his watchful eye. The 501st Legion is lucky to have such a watchful eye in its ranks and it is apt that he has chosen the Gunner as his debut costume. Let's give a warm welcome to our newest member of 2015, Isky!

A New Imperial Crewman Has Arrived

Please join us in welcoming the newest addition to the Malaysia Outpost, IC 11996, Daniel Iz'aan a.k.a. Mini Dan! Daniel hails from Sarawak and is current studying a physio course in MAHSA. Daniel first met with the 501st while we were trooping in the STEAM Festival at The School Jaya One. There he enthusiastically joined up with the team to act as Minder/Imperial Support. From then on, he and his friends have been avid supporters of the 501st and have been a tremendous help in giving their support to our troopers. It was then in April 2015 that he completed his costume, with the help of our members and got his approval on the 25th April, 2015.

A Commanding Officer's Thoughts, on the 501st Legion and the Malaysia Outpost

posted Apr 2, 2015, 6:13 PM by Kevin Wu   [ updated Apr 2, 2015, 6:15 PM ]

Our Commanding Officer, TK-8555 shares his thoughts on the importance of what we do and why we do it. It isn't that long of a read and every word of it carries meaning that comes from the heart.

The 501st Legion nicknamed Vader’s Fist, is an International Group of volunteers who take pride in wearing screen accurate costume to promote Star Wars to the world. With a range of “Bad Guy’s” from the popular saga Star Wars, these costumed villains are brought to life by members to promote the interest of Star Wars, facilitate the use of these costumes for Star Wars related events, and contribute to the local community through costumed charity and volunteer work.
People do make fun of us that we are adults dressing up in costumes; we’ve been called names and laughed at, this hasn’t stopped us from doing what we do best, this certainly hasn’t, stopped us from helping people in need, and definitely hasn’t stopped us from bringing a smile to a kid who is sick, or homeless.
The costumes you see are owned by the “trooper” they invest the time and money to put these costumes together, and they go out wearing these costumes proudly and full of purpose. Literally cooking in the armor in the scorching heat with restricted vision and breathing, they wear these costumes, with a singular purpose to aid and provide for the charity body that they set out to help
“We do not take any payments for the events we are asked to attend, we however welcome donations to any charity of your choice, or we can recommend one to you”. These are the words you will hear from our members.  The Legion and its member truly believe in the cause we set out to do, and we have been doing this for 9 years in Malaysia and 18 years around the globe. 100% of any money raised is given back to the charity. People sometime doubt us when we tell them that we will do this for free and all the funds raised will be channeled to charity or given back to the charity body!  They ask us “what is the catch here?”; “there is no free lunch in the world” and “nobody does this!”. The 501st Legion, has been doing this and is doing this, and will continue to do this for years to come.

Year End Summary 2014

posted Dec 28, 2014, 7:54 PM by Kevin Wu   [ updated Dec 28, 2014, 8:04 PM ]

Greetings to all, as we round up the last few days of the year 2014, we here at the 501st Malaysia Outpost have worked tirelessly all throughout 2014 with many ups and downs to bring smiles and cheers to many fans and kids alike. Continuing from the work we have done and the relationships we have established with many Charity Organizations such as Make A Wish Malaysia and United Voices, we hope to move ever forward, stronger as before to help out many more Organizations and Beneficiaries bring much needed joy and help to all who need it. This is inline with our goal to reach Garrison status (to have more than 25 active members) as well as being a lot more involved in many more charitable events to come.

Without further ado, we would like to announce that we have successfully raised RM 40,504.96 of funds in donations across 32 days of events! That is a 157% increase from our 2013 collection of RM 15,770.05!

  • Rumah Juara

  • Christopher and Dana Reeves Foundation
  • Yayasan Chow Kit

We would also like to take the oppurtunity to announce our Trooper of the Year 2014, with a total of 60 appearances to date since he joined! Trooper Daniel Wong (TK 6316), our very own Public Relations Officer!

But behind every trooper, is a minder, Imperial Support. Without these brave volunteers, working tirelessly to take care of our troopers, to be their seeing eye and to help out with any armor mishaps, our entire operation would have ceased to exist. We would like to have the honor to announce our Minder of the Year 2014, Our very own Honorary Member, Mr Ivan Wong! For without whom, we would not have our photographs taken, our armor's fitted and our donation box filled!

And last but not least, as always, we would not be where we are without You, the public, for the fantastic generosity shown by all of you in Malaysia as well as from those across the World! Truly in numbers, can we make a difference, can our voices be heard! Without all of you, we would never have been able to raise the amount we posted above, thus we thank you from the bottom of our hearts and hope that you continue to give us your support as we head into 2015... A great year ahead and not just because of Star Wars Episode 7, but for many more smiles to give to children and many more charities to help out! With that, we bid 2014, a fond farewell and usher in 2015!!

But you know what? You can be part of this team too!! That's right! Why not extend a helping hand and march forward with us! Come over to our booth at any of our future events and speak to us to find out what you can do! But if you are too shy (Our Stormtroopers can look quite intimidating, we admit) feel free to drop us an email at!

Seasons Greetings and Merry Christmas!
