2012 Hobbycon and Sabah Cheshire Home Visit

posted Dec 12, 2012, 7:22 AM by Kevin Wu

On the 8th and 9th December 2012, two troopers from West Malaysia went on an operation across the South China sea to the Island of Borneo to troop on behalf of our  friends in Sabah, the Land below the Wind at Hobbycon 2012. Hobbycon is an exhibition for the arts, comics and games that is held every year since 2007 in Kota Kinabalu. Youths from across Borneo and some from West Malaysia turn up at this even to share in the joy and culture that has brought them together in this event. This year, Hobbycon 2012 is held at Citymall KK where our two troopers descended upon the crowd!

For more on Hobbycon, feel free to visit their site here to learn more about them!

Here we have an account of the event by our very own Trooper, Paul Ting.

"The 501st Legion Malaysia invited by HobbyCon organiser as mysterious guest, with only 1 stroomtrooper and royal guard answering the call to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

The infamous Pol a.k.a. SaberFreak was there as our tour guide. He drove us around KK, showed us the sights and finally brought us over to our destination City Mall, our accommodation is located right inside the Mall, Clyne (Lacus) Hotel, got a rest.

The first day of the event, all the cosplayers are already out there taking pictures with visitors, the organizer told us to hold on, because we are the ‘mysterious guest’. when the VIP giving the speech, we are told to suit up and get ready. Finally, we made our first Official appearance in Sabah and Borneo!

After the walk on the stage, we went on a walkabout, taking pictures with other cosplayers and visitors.

The second day was almost the same, but this time it was pretty much free and easy, only this time we brought our own camera. we mix around with the cosplayers and we also managed to play PS3 Rock Band in our suit! Our beloved stormtrooper also got an interview from the local TV show RTM.

The overall response from the crowd is great, we were barely able to move from location to location, always standing there for half hour each photo session.

On behalf of the 501st Legion Malaysia, we would like to Thanks, Pol Nex our Tour Guide, HobbyCon organizer Julian and his wife Farah, and other HobbyCon members that give us much fun and support. We are gladly looking forward to the next celebration with Hobbycon event. May the Force be with you all.

Sabah Cheshire Home Visit

Since we flew 1200km away (and nearly 2 hours +) from our HQ, we decide to pay a visit to ahandicap home in KK.
On the morning of the third day, Pol took us to ‘Sabah Cheshire Home’ the handicap home. There, we suited up and appeared in front them, They were so surprised and their happy priceless face, some of them even crying with happy tears. We interact with them and tookpictures with them, along with their staffs and volunteers. We then mingled around for1 hour and that marks our first ever troop for Sabah and Borneo."

We are proud to announce, since our first trooping of the year at 1 Mont Kiara for Rumah Juara until the Jog for Hope at Taylor's Sri Hartamas, the 501st Legion Malaysia Outpost has successfully manage to raise a total of around RM 14,000! From the start of the year until 16th July, 2012, after trooping at events from Penang to Ipoh and all around KL, the proceeds from this grand total were for the Rumah Juara Brownie Points, Kechara Soup Kitchen, Yayasan Chow Kit, Child Protection Society and SPICES, to name a few.

We would not have amassed such an amount if it weren't for the generous public for giving not only your hard earned money for the benefit of the less fortunate, but also your heart and prayers. This will not be possible also without the help from our crew of volunteer minders and a special shout out to the minions at MGCCon for your tireless and enthusiastic help! Last but not least to the troopers of the Empire, for not only sacrificing themselves to ewoks and rebels, but also their time and energy to bring the Heart of the Empire to everyone!

Here is to another GREAT second half of the year!

On Saturday the 7th of July as well as Sunday the 8th of July, the stormtroopers, royal guards and officers of the 501st Malaysia Outpost were at the Bangsar Shopping Center trooping for the Society of the Severely Mentally Handicapped. Lord Vader pried himself from his busy schedule to grace the event and even the Emperor's presence was felt when his ever intimidating Royal Guards flanked Lord Vader as he escorts Puan Fadilah and Sheila Majid during the opening of the event on Saturday.

The Event itself is a cashless event, solely relying on coupon booklets to allow the participating public to trade in the coupons for products ranging from food and beverages to daily amenities like soap. The troopers conducted the standard operations for these events by offering printed photo's onsite with a generous donation of RM 10 as well as having a walkabout while carrying the donation boxes.

The total tally of funds collected on Day 1, Saturday the 7th of July are:

RM2050 + RM104 tickets (coupons)

While on Day 2, Sunday the 8th of July are:

RM2039.65 + RM195 tickets

That brings our total of donations collected on both days to: RM4284.65!! A new Record!

That goes without saying, Thank you for the great help provide fellow minders, new and old, your help was no more as important than the troopers. To our photographers, your photo's will always serve to help make the event successful as well as to make fond memories for future generations to enjoy. Finally... Malaysia Games and Comics Convention 2012

The 501st Malaysia

The 501st Legion Malaysia have had the honor of being invited to the first ever Malaysian Games and Comic Con and from the looks of things, it is looking like a wonderful and awesome start to a very beautiful relationship between the Malaysia Outpost and the MGCCon Council and Minions!

The MGCC is a convention to bring together local artist talents and their fans in one place, as well as to promote their wonderful work. Artists like Billy Tan who worked for Marvel to Cosplay Photographer Jay Tablante himself was present. Not to mention the Cosplay Queen, Alodia Gosengfiao herself has decided to grace this event. The MGCC was held at the Damansara Jaya campus of the Kolej Damansara Utama on the 19th and 20th of May, 2012. Where members of the 501st Legion Malaysia commited themselves to MGCC as well as to Yayasan Chow Kit (Chow Kit Foundation).

Yayasan Chow Kit was started at 2006 when a day care centre was expanded to a 24 hour crisis and drop off center that provides meals, medical attention, therapy and care for the childrens of Chow Kit. They currently have 3 facilities in KL that are dedicated to providing these services to the children. The main goal of the Foundation is to protect the rights of the children's and youths at risk. To offer a safe haven as well as provide positive and holistic opportunities for them to reach their full potential.

During the two days of the troop, the 501st Legion Malaysia have successfully raised RM1206 in these 2 days for the Foundation with help from the ever supportive public and visitors to the MGCC as well as from the MGCC Council as well! Truly this would never have happened if all these ingredients had not come together to be mixed into a recipe for success!

RC Niner and Darth Maul

A multitude of characters came to support this event, even Lord Vader himself made time to stop by to greet his minions and fans! But Vader wasn't the only Darth to have come by, for his predecessor, Darth Maul also stopped by to scare some gungans away! We would also like to make a very special shout out to two very reliable, helpful and wacky minions, Ng Yew Leong and Chee Heong from KDU for helping us out for both days!

Before signing off, here is a little something from us at the Malaysia Outpost, to Dave Harris and the UKG.

Troopers at Day 2 of Kechara Event at Sunway Pyramid

After a troop that is nothing but outstanding, the troopers of the 501st Legion Malaysia Outpost have added another 2 days of trooping to the chalkboard. Sunway Pyramid is once again conquered by the 501st Legion after so many years since their last appearance. Kechara's food bank and charity drive was also successful with mountains of non perishable food supplies on various shopping carts as well as their food bank basket! Truly the generous spirit of the public knows no bounds and this shows that we are all still willing to help out no matter the cost.

Kechara team assisting the Legion.

The team from Kechara were also fantastic in their help with minding and assisting the troopers and here is a shout out to Wan, Leann and the rest of the team. Also we'd like to thank the Emcee and DJ for being such wonderful people with their singing and dancing and announcing what the 501st Legion is all about to the public! And not to forget Ms May Woo for having us troop to help out the soup kitchen as well as the houses being supported by them. There truly is no greater cause than this.

In all this excitement, the 501st Legion Malaysia Outpost has successfully helped Kechara Soup Kitchen to raise a total of RM 3285 from photograph print outs and walkabout donations. This includes RM 1888 from day 1 proceeds and RM 1397 from day 2.

Though there were a few who were unable to make it in earnest, their presence was felt and their will to commit to charity was heard, not only by us but by the public as well. It was truly an event to behold and with only better ones to come.

Tsem Rinpoche's blog has also posted about the event, the link to the blog is posted below. Please do excuse the mistake though as again, not everyone is privy to the existence of Star Wars especially to an extent that we are all familiar with.
